Bio of Doc Holliday
Richard J. ("Doc") Holliday has actively promoted organic agriculture and holistic veterinary medicine for more than 45 years, a passion that grew from reading Louis Bromfield's books Pleasant Valley and Malabar Farm when he was only 14 years old. He received his DVM degree from the University of Missouri in 1959, after studying under Dr. William Albrecht, the head of the University's Soils Department. During this time his knowledge of the relationship between soil fertility and animal health greatly expanded. Upon graduation, Dr. Holliday conducted a private mixed practice in northwest Missouri for 25 years. His experience with feeding self regulated individual minerals to grazing animals, both beef and dairy, dates back to the early 1960s when he began using that system with his own livestock as well as recommending it to his clients. He was employed as a Technical Services Veterinarian by Impro Products, Inc., for many years, and is currently the Senior Veterinary Consultant for Helfter Feeds, Inc., of Osco, Illinois. Dr. Holliday became certified as a Veterinary Acupuncturist in 1988 and was President of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society from 1992 to 1994. Richard and his wife, Ruth, have been married for 56 years and have 3 daughters, 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.

Jim Helfter, a former aerospace researcher for Bendix Aviation Corporation in Davenport, Iowa, had become concerned about the widespread use of antibiotics in animals. Jim spent a lot of time studying animals (in relation to interplanetary travel), and he wasn't so sure injecting animals with antibiotics and hormones to treat the symptom or to make livestock grow faster was a good idea for the future.
As a result, Jim founded Advanced Biological Concepts and Helfter Feeds, Inc. more than 43 years ago with the mission to "improve the quality of life for mankind by improving the quality of life for animals through natural nutrition." Over the years Jim and his companies have gained a worldwide reputation.
As CEO, Jim has dedicated his company to provide producers with nutritional technology to achieve maximum animal health for the production of drug and hormone free meat and milk. He believes that animal health problems are due to nutritional deficiencies from single source diets and related environmental conditions such as confinement.
Advanced Biological Concepts, which produces natural feed supplements and nutritional additives for horses, focuses on the cause of a disease or problem, not the symptom. No use of antibiotics or mega doses of a single nutrient is used to enhance equine performance or health.
Helfter Feeds, Inc., is the first organic company certified under the USDA/National Organic Program. The company offers a complete line of certified USDA/NOP organic livestock products and custom formulates based on the customers needs and conditions.
